There are LOADS of crystal geckos that drop sharpstones at the 2-x world, it's the most efficient way to get them. Those monsters with pickaxes also drop them with some persistence, and you can buy them from the merchant at the beginning of 2-1 for 500 souls ea IIRC.

Literally the best way to get sharpstones is to farm souls. Just go to 4-4 and kill some mantas, go back to 2-1 for Shards and 2-2 for large shards. If you need Chunks or Pures, go to 1-3 and 1-4 and kill the lizards there.

If you want chunks of sharpstone, get pure black world tendency and repeatedly kill the pickaxe miners in 2-2. Equipping the large sword of searching (if you have it) helps with the drop rate, but not with the content of the drops. Mini-phalanxes do not drop chunks of sharpstone.

Demon's Souls

2-2 filthy man merchant sells shards and large shards of hard/sharpstone. They are all dropped by miners in world 2. Go purblack world tendency and using large sword of searching farm the bare fist miners and the pickaxe miners.
