*carries you throughout your whole Johto run*
Does it not bother anyone else that you can run through the game with just your starter?
Atleast until the last gym

Johto is by far the easiest to do that with
Other games will give you a bit of a challenge, but I can grab Cyndaquil or Totodile and spam A until the last gym- Anonymous

it's easy in all the games dude. as a kid I played through the first 3 gens with just my starter. if you don't find it fun, just don't do that. I raise 6 Pokemon evenly now, not because it's the most optimal, but because it's fun and pretty much the only reason I play Pokemon nowadays is to team build. if you go out of your way to play the game in a way that isn't fulfilling to you, then ask why you do that.

You know I've been seeing that said a lot. If I were to replay Johto I think I might just go with the starter, Ampharos, and the rest being hm slaves. Or just use pkhex to level up everyone idk

mainly by people who scapegoat Johto for problems of the entire franchise

That would work, but that would work in any region - Anonymous

not really, that's just means its a good starterAnonymous Or the region sucks and is weak as frick. Considering it's Johto, it's that.

It pisses me off that Johto is a sh*t region gameplay wise because it is designed so well

Meanwhile CHARIZARD just blasts through KANTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO in RB because the only thing worse than the bosses Pokémon's movesets is their moronic AI, yet no one bats an eye- Anonymous

I remember the moron who argued Chikorits was enough for HGSS and had to save scum against fricking bugsy and use other pokemon.

tbh he could have not had as much of a problem if the small indie company didn't gatekeep actual coverage moves from Chikorita
Many years later and the small indie company is still gatekeeping.

It is weird that people pretend Chikorita is some unusable sh*tmon in Johto though. Scyther and Gengar are the only two things it can’t just muscle past in the game; everything else is a cakewalk.

The bad early game sours expectations. If you divest any of its XP away to other Pokemon Falkner's Pidgeotto will start to be too overwhelming. Bugsy's Scyther and Silver's Quilava are huge roadblocks and combine that with how unsatisfying it feels to not be able to use your STAB against all the grass, bug, and poison types, it's not surprising that most people decide to drop it / resign it to HM slave at this point.

The Pokemon community has a history of overblowing sh*t out of proportions making something more of a problem than it actually is to the point it can be a circlejerk. Also if the constant sh*t Chikorita gets means that Game Freak won't unfrick it then the community has brought this up on themselves.- Anonymous

Also, Johto the the region that's gone the longest without a game, The average pokemon fans only experience with Johto is the memes, hence why Meganium is particaular gets so much hate.

Its concern trolling so that they can claim the Johto is badly designed for "hating" grass type

You should be able to play at least the campaign with any pokemon you want. Don't blame the game for your lack of curiosity/creativity just because it didn't force you to change... you can always play the game again with different pokemon.

Game Freak should understand that and not intentionally frick over fully evolved Pokemon like Meganium for the sake of it then.

It's not any harder in Gen 1 to be fair, if you picked Squirtle. Gen 3 had that one rival fight that was a pain in the ass for Mudkip but that's it. Pokemon always had this sort of problem with exp distribution and I'm not sure of the best way to fix it.

The way to fix it is to either skip some fights or rotate more than 6 pokemon. That's how I've been playing for a long time, usually have enough to raise 9 pokemon (in the games without exp all) while staying comfortable underlevelled for a nice challenge, yet never having to stop and grind.
Just entered Hall of Fame on an Emerald run with Swampert, Gardevoir, Plusle, Dustox, Banette, Heracross all in the late 30s/early 40s. Granted, if I didn't choose Mudkip or swap out my Hariyama for Heracross I might have had a much harder time, they carried quite a bit. - Anonymous

In Gen 1 misty is annoying
In Gen 3 Brawly and some rival battles are annoying
Nothing like that happens in Gen 2, it's literally all smooth sailing- Anonymous

it's really just the low level bottleneck (which ironically applies to whitney also)
level 28(?) or whatever starmie can be annoying and brawly is neutral against the normal/flying type you get in the beginning

Chikorita is the best starter for GSC, not because Chikorita itself is any good, but because it makes Silver take Cyndaquil, which opens him up to a huge weakness against the true MVP of the game: Geodude.
You can catch a Geodude in the Dark Cave before Violet City, ranging level 2-4, and all you need to do is level it to level 11, where it learns Rock Throw. That kills everything in Falkner's gym, and only a short time later at level 16 it learns Magnitude. Rock Throw will make short work of Bugsy's gym too, and Silver in Azalea Town will have Gastly (weak to Ground), Zubat (weak to Rock), and Quilava (weak to both).
Once you reach Goldenrod City you can head north to Route 35 and pick up the TM for Rollout to replace Rock Throw. Geodude will already have Defense Curl, learned at level 6, letting you turn Whitney's strategy against her. Set up on Clefairy and blow her away.
Magnitude will take care of Morty's gym too, as he only has Kanto ghosts. In the Burned Tower Silver adds a Magnemite to his team, which is no problem. It's hard countered by Chuck's dojo, but by then you can get an Espeon or Kadabra to fill in the gaps, and grind with Tentacruel to get it to shape.

Been saying this for years. Chikorita + Geodude is legitimately the strongest combination in GSC. In HGSS too, for most of the game (unless you replace with Tyranitar later, but that’s grindy).

Which is hard countered by Meganium. Don’t even need to raise a psychic type or anything.
